Can you run Sunday slides from a Chromebook?
What works on a Chromebook for church lyrics and scripture — browser-based tools, HDMI limits, and when you still need a Windows or Mac box.

A Chromebook can run Sunday slides. It can also fail in ways a Windows booth PC never would. The difference is not the lid logo. It is whether your software lives in a browser, whether you can get a clean HDMI picture to the house, and whether the operator can still advance if ChromeOS updates overnight.
This guide is for churches that already own Chromebooks and want to put lyrics and scripture on the projector. If you need a deep booth production surface, buy a cheap Windows mini-PC. If the job is lyrics, scripture, and a simple announcement loop, a Chromebook plus a browser-based tool can be enough.
Why most booth-class apps will not install
ProPresenter, EasyWorship, MediaShout, and most of the names you hear in a Facebook group are desktop applications. They expect Windows or macOS. ChromeOS will not run those installers. Android app stores on some Chromebooks do not change that. Linux containers are a weekday experiment, not a Sunday plan.
If your church already paid for a Windows-only license, the Chromebook is the wrong computer. Put the licensed software on a church-owned Windows machine and leave the Chromebooks for email. See the category map of church presentation software if you are still sorting which shape of tool you have.
If you have not bought anything yet, do not start from the Chromebook and work backwards. Start from the Sunday job — songs, scripture, one volunteer, a projector — then ask whether a browser can do it. Choosing software without a media team is the decision frame. HDMI and USB-C: getting a picture to the house
Many Chromebooks have no HDMI port. They have USB-C. That means an adapter lives in the bag. The adapter is part of the signal path. If it stays in a volunteer’s backpack, Sunday starts with a black screen.
Treat the adapter like a cable:
- Buy two. Label both. Leave one in the booth.
- Test the exact adapter on the exact Chromebook on the exact projector input. Some do video and no audio. Some handshake badly with older projectors.
- Write the projector input on a card. If the room has a switcher, use the same labeled input every week.
- Mark the USB-C port that actually outputs video. On cheap machines, one port charges and the other does not send a picture.
Audio from a video announcement is the usual surprise. HDMI can carry sound to the house, or it can leave sound on the Chromebook speakers. Confirm this on Saturday with the house system up. Lid-close behavior matters more on a Chromebook than on a desktop. If the machine sleeps when you close it, do not close it. Turn off sleep on AC power if the settings allow it. Disable the lock screen timeout for the church profile.
The house must never see the playlist, the next-slide preview, or a Chrome tab bar. Use an extended display, not a mirror. After you plug in, put the house output on the external screen only and keep current / next / jump on the lid. Some browser tools open the house view in a second window you drag onto the projector. Practice that drag on Saturday and full-screen it. If you cannot get a true extended desktop, use a different computer.
Performance: lyrics are light, video is not
Advancing lyric slides is easy work for a CPU. Playing a 1080p announcement video, a motion background, and two displays at once is not. Chromebooks sold for email and classrooms are often underpowered for that combination.
Test the actual Sunday: one song, one scripture passage, one video you really use, and the announcement loop for ten minutes. Watch for dropped frames and delayed clicks. If the click lags, the singer waits on the screen. That is a hardware problem.
If the machine is slow, cut motion first — static backgrounds, shorter videos, no live camera. If it is still slow, the Chromebook is the wrong box for video. It may still be fine for lyrics and scripture only.
Do not stack extra Chrome tabs. The church profile should open the presentation tool and nothing else. Schedule ChromeOS updates for Monday so a restart does not land on Sunday morning.
Offline: what happens when the network drops
A Chromebook is happiest on wifi. Church wifi is not always happiest on Sunday, when every phone joins the guest network.
Ask the tool a blunt question: if the access point dies during verse two, do the slides stay up? Can you still advance? Can you jump to a scripture slide that was already loaded?
Web-based church presentation software is a different risk than a local install. The local install fails when someone takes the laptop home. The browser tool fails when the session cannot reach a server — unless it was built to keep presenting from what is already on the machine.
Before you commit a Chromebook to the booth, load next Sunday’s songs and verses, turn wifi off, and advance through the service. If the tool freezes, blanks, or asks you to sign in again, that tool on that Chromebook is not your Sunday computer. A phone hotspot is not a plan. It still depends on cellular coverage in a brick building.
Browser-based tools
If the Chromebook is the computer you have, you need software that runs in a browser. That is a small slice of the field. Cloud-first tools such as Proclaim are often bought with a wider church-software stack; ask what their present mode does when the network drops. Other churches keep a simple local backup — a PDF or a PowerPoint — on the Chromebook for the worst morning. Some rooms use Google Slides because the file is already shared. It is a general slide tool, not church presentation software.
WorshipDeck is a web-based church presentation tool that runs in a browser, including on Chromebooks. It has no free tier. It is a poor fit if you want a deep, booth-native production surface as the primary workflow. When you should buy a Windows or Mac box instead
A Chromebook is the wrong primary computer when:
- The church already owns a Windows-only or Mac-only presentation license
- You need a machine that stays in the rack and never goes home
- Sunday includes several videos, live switching, or a confidence layout you cannot drive from ChromeOS
- The only Chromebooks you have are personal staff machines
- You cannot get a stable extended display through the adapter you own
- Offline presenting does not work with the tool you chose
A used or inexpensive Windows mini-PC, a known-good HDMI cable, and a church login is often the calmer path. It is not a production upgrade. If you are choosing software for the first time, do not let the Chromebook cart force the whole decision. Software for churches without a media team starts from the volunteer and the files, not from the lid logo.
